Your Financial Glossary

Dividend Yield

Annual Dividend Per Share/Current Stock Price

This is the amount a firm chooses to pay out each year, relative to the firm’s share price. In other words, this figure represents your return on investment.

Small Cap Stock

Cap stands for capitalization (market capitalization that is). Small cap stocks generally possess a market cap of between $300 million and $2 billion.

Intrinsic Value

The intrinsic value of a stock is the real value determined through technical or fundamental analysis. It does not refer to the actual market value that you see every day in the stockmarket.

Value Investor

This kind of strategy involves buying into those companies who are trading at a share price less than their intrinsic value. In other words, these stocks are undervalued compared to what the market portrays.

Volatility

Volatility refers to the amount of variation in a given share price. In simple terms, it’s the up and down movements that also reflect the amount of risk involved. If a stock has higher volatility, it is more risky as the price dramatically changes in a short period of time either up or down. A stock possessing low volatility will move at a steady rate.
